OUR STORY.

About us: About Us

HerStory Madagascar’s mission is to use various forms of storytelling to highlight the important contributions Malagasy women have made to Malagasy history, culture, and society and increase awareness of the issues that affect Malagasy women.

HerStory Madagascar, a non-profit association registered in Madagascar, supports storytelling in the form of published books and print media as well as other creative forms such as art, film, video, dance, song, digital media, slam poetry, etc: any medium that can effectively tell a story.

HerStory Madagascar is committed to telling the stories of Malagasy women and girls from different regions, backgrounds, and ethnic groups, representing various fields of work and spheres of influence.

HerStory Madagascar originated from a discussion among a group of female friends about International Women’s Day and who were Madagascar’s “she-roes”, the well-known women that have made a contribution to Malagasy culture, history, or society; who when asked, people would automatically recall without hesitation. The group of friends paused, struggling to think of many examples. The group could think of plenty of well-known men, but very few women. And so it dawned on the group: if we couldn’t identify these women, then how would younger Malagasy women be able to either?

It wasn’t that these women didn’t exist - their stories just hadn’t been recorded or given the space to be told, as has been the experience of women throughout history, not just in Madagascar.

Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to share experiences and Madagascar has a long and rich history of storytelling. We thought, what if we could raise the profile of women, including young women, through storytelling, in ways that were creative and interesting, particularly for younger Malagasy women? And so HerStory Madagascar was born.
